Philly Picks Winner For Another Casino

On Tuesday, Pennsylvania gaming regulators picked a winner for the license to build the second casino within Philadelphia’s city limits. It will be the fifth in close proximity to the city.

According to the AP, the winning project is a joint venture between Cordish Cos. of Baltimore and Greenwood Gaming & Entertainment, which is based in Bensalem, Pennsylvania.

The former owns Maryland Live! Casino in Maryland and the latter operates Parx Casino, which sits just outside Philadelphia. Three other firms were in contention for the second Philadelphia license. Las Vegas mogul Steve Wynn was once interested in Philly, but bailed out about a year ago.

Some, like Philly’s mayor, were complaining that the selection process was moving far too slow. Recent comments by powerful individuals appeared to speed the process along.

The only other casino in the city, SugarHouse Casino, doesn’t want another casino to open in Philly, citing gaming over-saturation concerns. According to reports, a lawsuit could be coming to prevent the new project. SugarHouse just recently opened a brand new poker room.

Based on reports, it doesn’t seem like the second casino will be stopped, however.

It’s unclear what kind of poker offerings Philly’s soon-to-be Live! Hotel & Casino will have. The Las Vegas-style casino will be in South Philly’s stadium district.
